Three years after the tiny lens died, the nineties silhouette returns at full width. Bella Hadid in vintage Chanel. Hailey Bieber in The Row. The shape that never quite left.
May 8. Numéro runs a roundup of rectangular sunglasses styled as "the nineties look." Bella Hadid in vintage Chanel, Hailey Bieber in The Row, Jennifer Lawrence in something unidentified. The frame that defined 1997 is back at full retail in 2026.
The shape cycled out around 2019 when the tiny oval took over. By 2021, the oval shrank further until it was barely a lens. Then silence. Then this: the rectangle, wide at the temple, flat across the top, often in tortoiseshell or black acetate. Not a reissue. A return.
The tell is in the width. The nineties frame sat wide on the face, sometimes past the temple. The 2010s wayfarer was narrower, more compact. This new run splits the difference but leans wide. Chanel's archive piece, the one Hadid wore in paparazzi shots last month, measures 145mm at the bridge. That's wider than most contemporary releases by 8mm.
The Row's version, which Bieber wore to a gallery opening in April, retails at $490. Flat matte black acetate, no logo, no hinge detail. It's the same frame The Row has sold since 2018 with minor tweaks to the arm length. The shape never left their line. It just took three years for the rest of the market to circle back.
Numéro frames this as "embracing the nineties look," but the piece is less a trend report than a confirmation. The rectangle has been in rotation at Celine, Loewe, and Lemaire since fall 2024. Street style picked it up by spring 2025. Now it's in the how-to-wear coverage cycle, which means it's already halfway through its peak.
The question isn't whether the rectangle is back. It's how long before it narrows again.
The experimental line is back after three years. Fifteen pieces, most under £100, shipping June. Low-end design that doesn't apologize.
